MSU’s College of Nursing has decided that students who apply to their program during the August application WILL be able to complete the Lower Division Nursing courses in MISSOULA during Spring Semester 2012 as long as they have at least 8 students interested (which they almost certainly will).

If you had decided to wait to apply until January because of the inability to go to Bozeman for the lower division nursing courses during spring semester you may want to reconsider. Going to Bozeman during Spring 2012 for the lower divising nursing courses may no longer be required.

This application is for students to begin the upper division nursing courses during fall semester 2012. The lower division nursing courses will be completed during spring semester 2012 on the MSU-Bozeman campus.  The application deadline is August 1, 2011.

RUTH E. BENNETT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP ($400)

The Ruth E. Bennett Memorial Scholarship was established in 1998 by Paul D. Bennett and Thomas A. Bennett in memory of Ruth, who was Paul’s mother and Thomas’ wife.  The Ruth E. Bennett Memorial Scholarship recipient will be a University of Montana Pre-Nursing student and be chosen on the basis of academic progress.  The recipient will be awarded $200 per semester for the fall 2011/spring 2012 school year.

STOLL FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP ($1000)

This scholarship was established in memory of Gertrude Cope Stoll, Rudy (Skip) Stoll and Theresa M. Stoll-Sholey in 1990 and is to be awarded on a rotating basis to deserving students enrolled in The University of Montana Pre-Nursing and Pharmacy programs.  The scholarship for the 2011-2012 academic year is to be awarded to a Pre-Nursing student in memory of Gertrude Cope Stoll.  The recipient will be awarded $500 per semester for the fall 2011/spring 2012 school year.

MARY L. COBB MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP ($2000)

This scholarship was established in 2010 in memory of Mary L. Cobb to be awarded to deserving University of Montana students enrolled in the Pre-Nursing program.  The recipient must have graduated from a Montana high school, with preference being given to students from the Augusta, Cut Bank or Kalispell areas.  This scholarship may be received more than once, provided the student reapplies for the award each year.  The recipient will be awarded $1,000 per semester for the fall 2011/spring 2012 school year.

1)A calculated GPA of 2.75 or higher in required prerequisite courses (or their equivalents) is required to apply to the nursing program. The UM equivalent courses are: BIOL 312, BIOL 313, BIOM 250, CHMY 121, CHMY 123/124, COMM 111, PSYX 230/233, HHP 236, PSYX 100, SOCI 101, STAT 216 and WRIT 101

2)All required prerequisite courses must be completed with a grade of C or better (C- grades are not acceptable) and no more than two (2) of the required prerequisite courses may be repeated one (1) time to earn a grade of C or better.

3)At least 3 of the 5 required natural sciences courses must be completed with a grade of C or better to apply to the nursing program. These courses are: BIOL 312, BIOL 313, BIOM 250, CHMY 121, CHMY 123/124. (CHMY 123/124 count as one course.)

4)An MSU-Bozeman cumulative GPA of 2.75 is required prior to enrolling in the first semester of the junior year of upper division coursework.

5)The deadlines for submitting an application for upper division placement are now January 1st or August 1st each year, one full semester in advance of placement in lower division nursing courses and two full semesters in advance of placement in the first semester of the junior year of upper division placement. Applications will be made available through the College of Nursing’s website at: http://www.montana.edu/nursing/academic/placement.htm

6)Special Need requests are no longer being considered in the campus assignment process. Campuses will be based on the student’s priority points and the ranking of campuses on his/her application. If a student is not offered his/her 1st campus choice, he/she may request to be on the wait list for the desired campus and if not placed from the wait list, may re-apply during next application period.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR UM STUDENTS:
•If you have not completed BIOL 312 & BIOL 313 by this summer, you will need to wait until January to apply.

•Students applying this August will most likely need to go to Bozeman in Spring 2012 to complete the lower division nursing courses to start the upper division nursing courses in Fall 2012. (It is still possible to receive a Missoula placement for the upper division nursing classes.)

•Students applying in January 2012 will be able to complete the lower division nursing courses in Missoula in Summer/Fall 2012 to start the upper division nursing courses in Spring 2013 (in Missoula, if placement is received).

Summer Session registration for current UM students opens at 8:00 a.m. on January 24 . (That’s right…the first day of spring semester classes.)  The university will be offering section(s) of BIOL 312, BIOM 250 and CHMY 121, 123 & 124 along with several of the other pre- nursing required classes.  There will be limited seats available in the sections offered during summer session, therefore I strongly encourage you to register as soon as possible, especially if you must complete a specific course this summer in order to stay on track for admission to the nursing program.  I anticipate that they will fill quickly.  Summer session registration does NOT require an advising number.
