The following three scholarships are available for the 2011-2012 academic year for freshman or sophomore level University of Montana students in good academic standing who are majoring in Pre-Nursing.   Application packets are available in the Pre-Nursing Advising Office (Lommasson Center 286) and are due April 15, 2011.  Contact Tami Breske at tami.breske@mso.umt.edu with questions.

RUTH E. BENNETT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP ($400)

The Ruth E. Bennett Memorial Scholarship was established in 1998 by Paul D. Bennett and Thomas A. Bennett in memory of Ruth, who was Paul’s mother and Thomas’ wife.  The Ruth E. Bennett Memorial Scholarship recipient will be a University of Montana Pre-Nursing student and be chosen on the basis of academic progress.  The recipient will be awarded $200 per semester for the fall 2011/spring 2012 school year.

STOLL FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP ($1000)

This scholarship was established in memory of Gertrude Cope Stoll, Rudy (Skip) Stoll and Theresa M. Stoll-Sholey in 1990 and is to be awarded on a rotating basis to deserving students enrolled in The University of Montana Pre-Nursing and Pharmacy programs.  The scholarship for the 2011-2012 academic year is to be awarded to a Pre-Nursing student in memory of Gertrude Cope Stoll.  The recipient will be awarded $500 per semester for the fall 2011/spring 2012 school year.

MARY L. COBB MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP ($2000)

This scholarship was established in 2010 in memory of Mary L. Cobb to be awarded to deserving University of Montana students enrolled in the Pre-Nursing program.  The recipient must have graduated from a Montana high school, with preference being given to students from the Augusta, Cut Bank or Kalispell areas.  This scholarship may be received more than once, provided the student reapplies for the award each year.  The recipient will be awarded $1,000 per semester for the fall 2011/spring 2012 school year.

A new scholarship for Pre-Nursing students has been made available.  Three $2,000 scholarships will be awarded to qualified recipients for the fall 2010/spring 2011 school year.  Details and criteria for the scholarship are listed below: 

Mary L. Cobb Memorial Scholarship

Recipient selection:  Students enrolled in the Pre-Nursing program at The University of Montana.  Recipients must have graduated from a Montana high school. Preference shall be given to students from the Augusta, Cut Bank or Kalispell areas.  Recipients may receive this scholarship more than once provided they reapply for the award each year.

Nursing scholarship applications are now available in the bin outside the door of my office (LC 286).  One Pre-Nursing scholarship is available this year for $300 and will be awarded to an eligible first or second year UM Pre-Nursing student.  Students must submit application materials by April 28, 2010.  I will also bring applications to the Pre-Nursing Meeting on Wednesday, April 7th.

Please submit the following in a sealed 8 1/2 by 11 envelope:

1)   A completed scholarship application form.

2)   An essay of at least one but no more than two pages, double spaced, stating the reason you are choosing nursing for a career or profession, your personal and professional goals and why you are requesting a scholarship.

3)   Transcript of all college level work attempted through spring semester 2008.  The transcript need not be official.

4)   One letter of recommendation from a non-relative who is familiar with your academic accomplishments.

Scholarship opportunities will be discussed at the upcoming upper division nursing meeting to be held this Friday, April 10 from 1-2 p.m. in Corbin Hall 142.  However, I found this ad in the Missoulian for a scholarship that some of you may be interested in.  Below are the details:

New West Health Services is continuing its “Health Care for Montanans” scholarship program to help keep Montana health care students in Montana after graduation.

A maximum of nine $2,000 scholarships will be awarded this spring that can be used to pay for classes during the fall semester. The scholarships can be used at the following schools: Montana State University-Bozeman, MSU-Billings, MSU-Northern, University of Montana, Montana Tech of the University of Montana, Carroll College, University of Great Falls and Rocky Mountain College.

All Montana residents enrolled in their junior or senior year at any of these schools and majoring in public health, nursing or other shortage areas are encouraged to apply. The student must have a GPA of at least 3.0 and be interested in pursuing a health care career in Montana after graduation.

Scholarship applications are due by April 15 and should be returned to the New West headquarters in Helena. The winners will be announced by April 30. Complete details can be found at www.newwesthealth.com
